The CIEF Design Build Competition is an educational initiative designed to spark student interest in construction careers by offering real-world, hands-on experience. High school teams collaborate to design and build small structures—often around 96 square feet—gaining practical skills in construction, safety, and building codes. The event is backed by industry experts who provide mentorship, evaluate student projects, and create valuable networking opportunities. By making the program free for all participating students and schools, it ensures broad accessibility while highlighting the many career paths within the construction field. Now in its eighth year, Wide Open Walls has transformed Sacramento with over 400 murals and a mission to celebrate creativity through public art. Founded as a fundraiser for public arts education, the festival was built through collaboration among civic, business, and arts leaders to enrich the city’s cultural identity.
